Are You a Pell Grant Recipient? Want to Study Abroad?!

Thinking about studying abroad this Spring 2013? Are you a Pell Grant recipient and U.S. citizen?

Learn about the Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5000 for Pell Grant recipients to study abroad. In the past two years 43 Maryland applicants have won Gilman Scholarship for study abroad!

The deadline to apply for Spring 2013 Gilman Scholarships is October 2, 2012 and the National Scholarships Office provides strong support to applicants – learn more by attending one of our information sessions:

IMPORTANT: The deadline to apply for a Gilman Scholarship is fast approaching – October 2, 2012! Your chances of a successful application are dramatically stronger if you start your application early and seek advice from the National Scholarships Office.

ELIGIBILITY: You must be a US citizen receiving Pell Grants during the semester you plan to study abroad. For the October 2, 2012 deadline you must be planning to apply to Spring 2013 study abroad programs that are at least 4 weeks long – WINTER TERM COURSES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR GILMAN SCHOLARSHIPS.

Terps! The Division of Research at the University of Maryland has announced the FIA Seed Grant Competition. Here's your chance to meet some interested faculty members, form a team, and compete for grant money to conduct cutting-edge research. Don't miss out on this opportunity!

The Future of Information Alliance (FIA) is pleased to announce the FIA Seed Grant Competition. The contest represents an opportunity for faculty to work with motivated students, engage in transdisciplinary research, and connect with the 10 FIA Founding Partners (

Four teams of students and their faculty mentors will win up to $25,000 in grants. "It our students take part in the search for creative solutions to some of the most pressing issues of our time," says University of Maryland President Wallace Loh. The FIA Seed Grant Competition is made possible with support from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation (

Faculty are invited to join students, FIA staff and FIA Partners for the informational kickoff meeting on Sept. 24, 2-4 pm in the Stamp Student Union Colony Ballroom. Need Help With Math or Studying? We've Got You Covered!

Terps! We want to draw your attention to two programs offered in our residence halls that are designed to support the academic success of our students. Don't hesitate to take advantage of these programs and give yourself the edge you need to succeed!

Math Success - We’ve been offering this free, drop-in, peer tutoring program to students since 1997. We moved its base of operations from Easton Hall to Oakland Hall when the building opened last year and participation blossomed. In 2011-12, we had 6,414 visits to the program, more than doubling the visits from the previous year (3,194). The student math coaches that we hire and supervise assist their peers having difficulties, particularly focused on MATH 140, 141, and 220. Students can learn more about the Math Success program at

Guided Study Session - In collaboration with the Learning Assistance Services unit in the Counseling Center we offer Guided Study Sessions in Denton Community (Elkton, Denton, Easton) residence halls. The Guided Study Sessions are free, regularly scheduled study sessions for traditionally difficult courses such as BSCI 105, BSCI 106, BSCI 207, CHEM 131, CHEM 231, and ASTR 100. More than 2,500 visits to these study sessions occurred in Denton Community residence halls last year and more than 9,000 visits occurred in Guided Study Sessions across campus. Here is a little more information about each program:

AMERICA READS: America Reads Mentors work one-on-one with 1st and 2nd grade students in Prince George's County elementary schools who are struggling with reading. Training is provided. Shifts available: Monday through Friday, 7:30am-11:30am.

AMERICA COUNTS: America Counts Mentors work with small groups of 4th graders in Prince George's County elementary schools who are struggling with math. Mentors provide homework help, and engage students in math “centers” that review difficult math concepts in an active, hands-on way. Shifts available: Monday through Thursday, 1:30pm-5pm.

PARTNERS IN PRINT: The Partners in Print program provides a supportive environment where parents can discover how to help their children learn to read. Partners in Print mentors conduct evening workshops in local elementary schools with parents and their Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade children. These workshops are centered on ways parents can engage their children in reading at home. Training is provided.

Workshops are conducted in both English and Spanish. **SPANISH AND FRENCH SPEAKERS ARE HIGHLY DESIRED** Shifts available: Tuesday through Thursday, 5pm-8:30pm.

Want to Intern at the White House?! Of Course You Do!

Please spread the word among your fellow Terps: You can now apply for a Spring 2013 internship at the White House. The application for the Spring 2013 program is now open.

White House Interns dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community, and the nation. They become a part of the White House team, and the assignments given to an intern on any given day could include conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, writing memos, and staffing events. They also participate in a weekly speaker series with senior staff members and small group meetings exploring different policy aspects of the Executive Office of the President through speakers, discussion, off-site field trips, and service projects.

Participate in Paid Research on Learning & Using Foreign Languages!

Research: Brain Training to Improve Language Learning

Train your working memory and help scientists at the University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) learn how to help you learn and use foreign languages! You can receive $10 per hour of participation in this study, with participation time varying between 10 and 20 hours.

Working memory is what you use to store and process information in real time. You use working memory whenever you have to: focus, filter out distraction, switch between tasks, understand text or speech, or learn a new language. CASL scientists have developed a training regime to train working memory.

What will you be asked to do?

The length of participation ranges from 9 hours to 19 hours, spaced over several weeks and multiple 1 and 2-hour sessions. During these sessions you will be asked to complete tasks of memory, reading, thinking, and problem solving.

To be eligible to participate:
• You must be a Native English speaker between the ages of 18-40.
• You must have normal, or corrected to normal, hearing and vision.
• You must have unimpaired use of your dominant writing hand.
• You do not have a personal history of neurological, neuropsychiatric, psychiatric disorders, or learning disabilities.
• You do not have a recent history of excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, or substance abuse.

The study will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park: Biology-Psychology Building, Benjamin Building, or Cole Fieldhouse
