Check Out the Summer 2013 White House Internship Program!

Applications for the Summer 2013 White House Internship program are now being accepted!

White House Interns dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community, and the nation. They become a part of the White House team, and the assignments given to an intern on any given day could include conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, writing memos, and staffing events. They also participate in a weekly speaker series with senior staff members and small group meetings exploring different policy aspects of the Executive Office of the President through speakers, discussion, off-site field trips, and service projects.

A complete application includes: short answers, two essay questions, a one-page resume, and two letters of recommendation. The deadline to apply for the summr program is January 27, 2013.

Internship Opportunities at a Local High School!

Spring Semester 2013: Two Volunteer Internship opportunities in a Neighboring High School


INTERNSHIP mentoring and tutoring high school students having academic challenges; No specific major necessary, but an interest in supporting, encouraging and empowering youth. Experience working with minority (Latino and African-American) youth helpful, but not required. Tutors/mentors will assist with traditional homework assignments and learn coaching skills to assist youth in becoming independent learners and self-motivated. Enthusiastic, positive and patient spirit essential.

Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30 - 4:45pm, plus orientation and supervision Monday, 2:30-4:30pm, but not every week. Begins with the start of the spring semester at UMD.

Location: High Point H.S., Beltsville, MD, 15 minutes from UMD.

Credit Options: 2 credits, 90 hours for students interested in enrolling in BSOS288I or BSOS388I.


INTERNSHIP in Conflict Resolution and Training of Peer Mediators at local High School. An interest in conflict resolution, working with youth in small group setting is important; no specific major necessary. Background in Communications preferred. Conflict Resolution or Human Development experience is desirable. Experience working with minority (Latino and African-American) youth helpful, but not required. Interns will learn the ins and outs of building and maintaining a program in which high school students are trained to mediate conflicts between other students, both formally (when specifically requested by both parties to mediate a conflict) and informally (stepping in without a special invitation when a conflict emerges). Interns will assist with the training of the students, and also observe and oversee the mediations. Interns may also have the opportunity to observe and assist with Peacemaking Circles used in high school classrooms.

Pell Grant Recipients! Thinking of Studying Abroad?!

Are you a Pell Grant recipient and U.S. citizen? Are you thinking about studying abroad summer 2013, fall 2013, or for the 2013-14 academic year?

Learn about the Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000 for Pell Grant recipients to study abroad. In the past two years 43 Maryland applicants have won Gilman Scholarships for study abroad!

The deadline to apply for summer and fall 2013 and academic year 2013-14 Gilman Scholarships is March 5, 2013. The National Scholarships Office provides strong support to applicants – learn more by attending one of our information sessions:

The NIH Summer Internship Program application site is now open. The deadline for receipt of all applications is March 1, 2013 and letters of recommendation are due by March 15, 2013. If students from last summer would like to return to NIH this summer, they must reapply on or before the March 1st deadline.
