CIA Directorate of Intelligence Undergraduate Intern Program

Location:Washington, DC metropolitan area

The Central Intelligence Agency undergraduate internship program seeks motivated undergraduate students to serve full time internships in the analytic offices and centers of CIA's Directorate of Intelligence in the Washington metropolitan area. Undergraduate interns work on teams with our full-time analysts. They research, analyze, write, and brief on international political, military, economic, scientific, technical, and leadership developments. In addition to their analytic responsibilities, undergraduate interns become familiar with the Agency and Intelligence Community by participating in a range of meetings and projects. The program allows participants and the Agency to assess opportunities for a graduate studies internship or permanent employment following the participant's completion of undergraduate school.

Minimum qualifications: We are looking for students with a variety of majors, including international affairs, political science, area studies, economics, geography, physical sciences, or engineering. Students selected for this program must have completed one full year of undergraduate school and be continuing school on a full time basis following this assignment. Interns should be available for a 90-day internship with the possibility to do additional tours depending on availability. Paid Fall 2014 Women's Military History Internship

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History "Objectifying the Great War" program seeks an intern.


Our museum initiatives are striving to highlight through material culture the previously under-recorded history of the military roles of all women in American history, which include not only service in the military but a wide range of military related activities.  Even though the military as an institution interacts and draws resources from all of society, war is generally historicized by accounts centered on combat and battles, often independent of other traditional history.  A large event like the global war of 1914-1918 widely affected the entire population. The James Lollar Hagan Intern project examines Smithsonian collections relating to the Great War to fill in the gaps left by primary history sources.  

Especially abundant in Smithsonian collections are 20th and 21st century artifacts that illuminate women’s roles in military activity during World War I, artifacts that represent a broadly defined military history.  Included is women’s work in war industries and in War Department clerical offices, war service volunteers in the dozens of secular and religious organizations that proliferated in WWI, along with the first women who were actually inducted into the American armed forces. In accordance with the Museum’s mission to reflect the history of all American people, it is particularly relevant to identify these resources in order to achieve greater presence and visibility of women in American history.

The James Lollar Hagan internship: Objectifying the Great War/Women’s Military History for the fall of 2014, is seeking an intern who majors in history, American studies, museum studies, anthropology or related subject. The intern project calls for work with curators in the Division of Armed Forces History and other divisions and units of the Smithsonian on a multi-faceted curatorial project comprising artifact research with a digitization component and also planning for an exhibition and scholarly programs associated with the Grand Challenge Award proposal, The Great War Centenary. Intern responsibilities center on researching collections in all units of the Smithsonian to identify artifacts and documentary evidence of women's wartime roles in American history in the period 1914-1924. Using research results, the intern will develop a contextual object group of SI holdings on women in WWI military activities; this will provide an online resource for Great War Centenary commemorations that will burgeon in late 2014 in the U.S. and abroad. Intern will coordinate with an archivist in the armed forces division who is developing the Archive of Women's Military History as an element of the Grand Challenge award proposal, to integrate the object group data into the archive. Further, as part of the Grand Challenge, the Hagan intern will participate in framing an exhibition and organizing a scholarly symposium on the topic of volunteerism in early 2015.


This internship offers an opportunity to conduct specialized object research under curatorial guidance and to work with on-line content staff in New Media to utilize research results by producing an up-to-date digital contextual object group. Intern will also gain knowledge of archival practices, exhibit planning, and organizing a scholarly symposium.

The Hagan Intern supervisor will be Margaret Vining, Curator, Division of Armed Forces History, NMAH. The Intern work station will be Vining’s office, NMAH 4014.

Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue Program (WEIDP)!

Terps! As part of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, we offer the Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue Program (WEIDP) for undergraduate students who are interested in engaging with other students on difficult, but rewarding, topics. Our intergroup dialogues include dialogues across race, gender, nationality, sexuality, among others.

Classes are taught by trained and experienced facilitators. Participants can expect a rich and rewarding experience as well as an opportunity to develop skills in cultural competence.

All dialogues are 7-week, 1-credit courses that are held in the first and second halves of each semester and WEIDP courses satisfy the new General Education Cultural Competence.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is Hiring a Public Policy Coordinator

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation seeks a smart, organized, energetic team member with 1-2 yrs post-college experience for the position of Public Policy Coordinator.

This position serves to support the Public Policy Department and assist in the management of multiple federal and state-level grassroots and advocacy campaigns. The coordinator will help manage a variety of legislative and executive initiatives across 50 state legislatures aimed at increasing awareness of cystic fibrosis and helping to promote access to care for people with the disease. The Coordinator also assists in the planning and execution of large advocacy events such as March on the Hill, Teen Advocacy Day, and Board on the Hill as well as assisting volunteer Advocates in the field in meeting with elected officials.
Responsibilities will include:
  • Perform administrative tasks related to day-to-day departmental operations. Assist with administrative development for lobby days, special events and outreach activities.
  • Responsible for coordinating and maintaining federal and state lobbying documentation. Serves as department’s liaison with Accounting to ensure that all lobbying reporting is completed and properly reported.
  • Assist in the maintenance and drafting of departmental budget. Manage detailed accounting of expenditures, purchases, etc.
  • Responsible for the department’s public information email account. Answers email queries and responds to requests.
  • Coordinates, with the State Government Affairs Manager, state lobbying efforts, including communication with legislators and executive administrators, state volunteers, outside lobbying counsel, and chapter and care center staff. Drafts letters and policy documents, researches and analyzes legislation.

Experience will include:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, such as public policy, political science, biological science, or communications.
  • Must have at least a basic familiarity with the legislative and political process.
  • Strong computer skills in relevant programs.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Detail oriented.

About the Talk: How many racists does it take to maintain racial inequality? Historical evidence from the Jim Crow era suggests one needs a large number of racist advocates in various social arenas. More recent social scientific research, however, cites a significant decline in racist beliefs that have not been paralleled by declines in racial inequality. Hence, the strong hypothesized connection between racist attitudes and racial inequality was erroneous.

Summer Internship in CESAR!

Position:              Summer Undergraduate Internship (unpaid) 

Title:                    Research Assistant

Duties:                 The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist in the development and maintenance of the Maryland Community Services Locator website (www.mdcsl.org). Specific duties include:

  • Verify the accuracy of program listings in the database using online sources and telephone surveys
  • Data entry (using Excel) for responses from provider surveys
  • Assist in augmenting the comprehensiveness of the existing database through database comparisons, resource inventories, etc.
  • Outreach to community providers to promote awareness of the MDCSL in Maryland
  • Field work with community providers to promote awareness and use of the website
  • Assist with dissemination of materials to providers
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:   This candidate must have advanced organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. Additionally, he/she should be comfortable making telephone and in-person contacts with community providers. Preferred skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Experience working with community organizations and/or social service/health/criminal justice providers.

Hours: 16 hours/week minimum.

This is an unpaid internship open to undergraduate students only and may be used to earn BSOS, HLTH, or CRIM internship credit (3 credits).

 The BSOS Advising Center hopes you are having a great semester and wish you luck on your upcoming finals, papers and projects.  We would like to remind you of the advising tools available for students to use when selecting courses each semester.  You may have already registered or are getting ready to register for the Fall 2014 semester.   

Please use Degree Navigator, UMD’s academic auditing tool to see what courses you need as well as seeing how the courses you have taken apply to your degree requirements. This report is the tool your department advisor and college advisor uses to track students for the completion of benchmark courses, LEP gateway courses, GenEd courses, major requirements and finally graduation clearance. Each semester we encourage you to review this report closely and contact your department or college advising office if you have any questions about what you see in the report. 

Students must complete general education courses as part of the degree.  The requirements are either the  CORE Program or the requirements for the General Education Program.  Please visit the website to learn about each category you are required to complete.  For one Gen Ed category in particular there is an important advising point we would like to emphasize. “One of the two Scholarship in Practice courses selected must be outside the student’s major requirements.” Some of our BSOS majors have major requirements that are DSSP courses. Even if your major requires two DSSP courses, you still must take one outside of your major.  We are currently working with the campus to make sure Degree Navigator audits correctly display this requirement.  If your report shows two major courses in the DSSP section, please note that you must still register for another DSSP course outside you major.
