Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Executing on various client projects and business development initiatives concurrently
  • Drafting and editing documents including solicitation letters, summary level data and complete information memorandums including financial and operational data
  • Making follow up calls to clients and potential clients regarding marketing, confidentiality agreements, financials etc.
  • Being accountable for managing, planning and scheduling project tasks, timelines and deliverables
  • Data entry of new contact or company information
  • Conducting company and market research via the Internet and phone
  • Certain administrative responsibilities as assigned
 
While some of the activities are financial in nature, this is NOT a financial modeling/ spreadsheet-intensive position.   

Required Attributes
  • A minimum of a BS or BA four year undergraduate college level degree
  • Strong and effective communication skills – social media, verbal and writing
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, time management a must
  • Confident, outgoing, entrepreneurial attitude
  • Ability and willingness to make calls to owners and decision makers of businesses; good phone personality
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills including Excel, Word and Power Point  and a comfortable working knowledge of contact database (such as  ACT, Salesforce.com or SalesLogix), LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Positive, can-do attitude, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • High level of integrity in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters
  • Pleasant, up-beat, professional personality a must

Are you thinking about studying abroad in SUMMER 2014, FALL 2014, or for the 2014-15 ACADEMIC YEAR?

Are you a US CITIZEN receiving a PELL GRANT (a federal need-based educational grant)?

Then you should learn about the GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP, which provides up to $5000 for study abroad for students with financial need who receive Pell Grants. In the past two years 70 Maryland students have won Gilman Scholarships!

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers 1,700 scholarships of up to $5,000 to students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies world-wide. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. Programs must be at least 4 weeks in length.

Students are also eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program if their study abroad plans involve studying any of the following critical languages: Arabic (all dialects), Chinese (all dialects), Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Persian, Languages of India and Pakistan, Indonesian, Russian and Swahili.

Sponsored by the School of Public Policy, the Public Leadership Minor will allow students to examine pressing issues, such as the global environment, human rights, diversity, and poverty, that are facing today’s leaders. This minor provides students with a foundation of leadership development, from understanding leadership theories to enhancing their own critical thinking, community organizing, and problem solving skills. The Public Leadership Minor will complement any major on campus, while empowering students to become stronger citizens and leaders.

2014 Maryland Summer Scholars Program: Apply Now!

2014 Maryland Summer Scholars Program

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  For the summer of 2014, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 30 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

Who can apply: You are eligible to apply if you will have completed at least two full semesters (and 30 credits) by the end of Spring semester 2014, if you have a GPA of at least 3.4 at the time of application, and if you will be enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, in Fall 2015. All academic majors are eligible.

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2014 awards will be Tuesday, February 4, 2014. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

2014 Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

The US-UK Fulbright Commission is pleased to announce that applications are open for the 2014 UK Summer Institutes. Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.

There are nine Summer Programs available for US students in 2014.  The Summer Institute will cover the majority of the participant costs.  This includes round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the University, accommodation and social program, subsistence e.g. food and drink.

Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to:

- Experience an exciting academic program at a top ranked UK University
- Explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK
- Develop their learning skills, improving presentation, research and communication skills
- Become an ambassador for studying in the United Kingdom, and for the prestigious internationally renowned UK universities.
- Develop their knowledge in the academic program of their choice, be taught by world leaders in their field and receive credit they can transfer to their US University.

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is partnering with the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research (MCUR) to offer summer research scholarships for undergraduate students.

If you are interested in a summer research project, talk with potential faculty mentors now so that you can submit your application for Maryland Summer Scholars by February 4, 2014. For more information, please see the MCUR website. Top BSOS applicants for Maryland Summer Scholars will automatically be considered for the BSOS Summer Research Scholars. No additional application materials are needed.

MLAW – The Undergraduate Law Programs at University of Maryland

MLAW – The Undergraduate Law Programs at University of Maryland

The New MLAW Programs will launch in Fall 2014 with the support of M-Power. MLAW Programs are designed for undergraduate students from across campus who are interested in issues pertaining to law, justice and society.  The programs are interdisciplinary, experiential, and consist of courses and experiences taught by faculty from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, College of Arts and Humanities, and the University of Maryland Carey School of Law.

The Law and Society Minor offers upper-level students advanced interdisciplinary coursework and experiential learning opportunities. Current Maryland students (from any major) who wish to apply to the Law and Society Minor for Fall 2014 should visit the application website right away.  The application deadline for Fall 2014 is February 10, 2014. The College Park Scholars Justice and Legal Thought Program offers first and second year students a unique living-learning opportunity early in their undergraduate careers. New freshman applicants to the University for Fall 2014 are currently under review for College Park Scholars.

This is a pilot of what will be the first-semester course in the FIRE program sequence.   More information on the in-development sequence is detailed at:  http://fire.umd.edu/for-students.html

This pilot is designed to serve first and second year students who have an interest in STEM, social, animal and health science disciplines and would benefit from a multidisciplinary course that will prepare them for innovation and research activities.

The course is divided into three thematic units:
  • The irrationality of economic market patterns.
  • Epidemiology and predicting the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Atmospheric and natural phenomena prediction.
Across each of the three thematic units, students will engage:
  • The fundamentals of locating, reading, and analyzing primary literature.
  • The fundamentals of experimental and innovation design.
  • The fundamentals of collegial and communal group work.
  • The fundamentals of written and oral scholarly communication.

The White House Office of Presidential Correspondences Announces Summer Associate Program

The Summer Associate Program of the White House Office of Presidential Correspondences will run from May 27 through Aug. 8. Associates serve a minimum of 30 hours per week on a full-time schedule. This is an unpaid opportunity.



The Office of Presidential Correspondence facilitates an open dialogue between the President and the American people. The office’s mission is to listen to and understand the stories and concerns of the American people, and to connect the President with experiences and ideas from across our country. OPC receives and replies to: letters and emails; calls coming into the White House Comment Line; gifts sent to the First Family; requests for Presidential proclamations, messages, and greetings; and requests for assistance from the Federal Government. The office also provides President Obama with a daily sample of 10 letters to help him keep in touch with a broad range of ideas and experiences of people across our country.

Émigré Memorial German Internship Program

Cultural Vistas is currently accepting applications for the Émigré Memorial German Internship Program - German State Parliaments (EMGIP).

This program provides an opportunity for U.S. and Canadian students to intern at one of the German State Parliaments (“Landtage”) across Germany’s 16 state capitals. This is a great opportunity for individuals hoping to pursue careers at a regional level of government, or who are interested in specific public policy issues such as the environment, education, migration, and healthcare. Participants gain practical work experience with a state parliament, utilize their German skills and experience German political culture firsthand. Participants in this program receive monthly stipends to ensure a total monthly salary of EUR 670 (U.S. citizens only).

2014 SESYNC Undergraduate Summer Internship Program

The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) at the University of Maryland is accepting applications for the 2014 SESYNC Undergraduate Summer Internship Program. Interns in this program will spend the majority of their time working with mentors at their offices or labs on research projects related to socio-environmental issues. Additionally, interns will participate in weekly Internship Program events, including field trips and seminars: these events will include trips to SESYNC’s facilities in Annapolis, where interns will be introduced to the socio-environmental synthesis research approach, and will have the opportunity to meet researchers at the Center.

Internship Program Goals
This program for undergraduate students aims to provide interns with opportunities to develop professional skills, to meet people working on environmental problems, and to deepen their understanding of socio-environmental issues. More specifically, interns will:
  • Obtain an authentic research experience and contribute to their mentor’s research program.
  • Enhance their understanding of the complex nature of socially relevant environmental problems and the research approaches used to address them.
  • Enhance their understanding of how scientific evidence may be used to inform decision-making and policy with regard to environmental problems.
Program Details
Internships are full-time (40 hours/week) from June 2–August 8, 2014. Interns will be paid $10.50/hour.
The program will begin with a mandatory orientation on Monday, June 2, 2014. Internships will be based at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD. Transportation between College Park and SESYNC or other field trip destinations will be arranged.

Selection & Mentor Matching Process & Criteria
Interns will be selected by SESYNC staff based upon the strength of their academic record and achievements, and demonstrated interest in environmental sustainability and socio-environmental issues. Finalists for the internship will be notified by the end of March. SESYNC will match finalists with available mentors based on shared interests. We hope to find suitable placements for all finalists, but this is not guaranteed.
