Paid Internship with New America

The New America's Open Technology Institute is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual for a full-time or part-time paid summer internship. You must be passionate about technology and social justice. The intern will contribute to OTI’s community infrastructure project, documenting practices of community-built wireless networks and other community technology projects, contributing to the community technology website and popular education materials, and working with OTI’s engineers and technologists to test techniques for community wireless networks.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the documentation of community technology projects and practices;
  • Digest engineering and technology concepts and translate them into educational materials;
  • Conduct and document experiments with mesh routers and local servers;
  • Assist with adding graphics, documentation, blog posts and other materials to the community technology website;
  • Contribute to discussions about potential locally hosted applications for community networks, and conduct research into existing tools that could be used;
  • Other activities as needed

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess:

        • Strong Do-it-Ourselves technical ability and curiosity
        • Experience with Linux and/or networking
        • Interest in learning about community wireless networks
        • Experience editing websites and working in github preferred
        • Demonstrated interest in community organizing and social justice
        • Experience with principles of popular education
        • Acute attention to detail
