A Wider Circle is now in its 14th year of service to the most vulnerable children and adults in our nation’s capital region. The average family size of those we serve is 4 and the average annual income – from all sources – is $12,000. We serve the neediest of the needy. We have big goals for being a force in the movement to end poverty and have grown considerably in each of our 14 years.

The mission of A Wider Circle is simple: to end poverty for one individual and one family after another. We work in partnership with those we serve and with those seeking to help to ensure that every child and adult has the chance to succeed and the opportunity to live well. 

A Wider Circle is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that brings on 10-15 interns each semester to work out of our Center for Community Service in Silver Spring. Recent Grad? Entry-level Position in Bethesda with EPA Contractor

The Cadmus Group, Inc. seeks a highly-motivated entry-level professional to provide program support on energy-efficient building technologies, policy, and energy performance rating systems for our clients at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This position involves extensive work with EPA’s ENERGY STAR platform for commercial buildings. Intern with the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault

Position Overview
The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) advocates for accessible, compassionate care for survivors, the prevention of sexual assault, and accountability for all offenders.  MCASA actively works to end sexual violence in the State of Maryland through professional training, public outreach, public policy advocacy,   technical assistance, and legal services.

Through hands-on learning responsibilities, MCASA’s program interns are engaged in the important effort to end rape, child sexual abuse, and the full continuum of sexual violence including campus sexual assault and human sex trafficking. They are exposed to the latest thinking in the field of sexual assault prevention and response through webinars and trainings, professional meetings, and written resource materials. Program interns also come away with practical knowledge about a statewide nonprofit organization’s strategies for office management, internal and external communications, professional training, and public outreach.  

A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required.  Interns are encouraged to work with their academic institutions to seek credit.

This internship is located at our metro-accessible Silver Spring, MD office.

Intern Objectives
  • Develop and expand knowledge regarding sexual violence and policies to prevent and respond to sexual assault and abuse.
  • Develop ability to write and format professional documents such as letters, fact sheets, website content, and newsletter articles.
  • Expand professional speaking skills by answering and making telephone calls.
  • Become familiar with client referrals by providing information about MCASA’s Sexual Assault Legal Institute and Maryland rape crisis and recovery centers to survivors who call the office.
  • Learn about event management by assisting with logistics coordination for professional training sessions and fundraising events.
  • Enhance research skills by completing written projects regarding sexual violence.
  • Develop an understanding of nonprofit membership development and engagement by updating and maintaining electronic database records.
  • Participate in public outreach by attending events, staffing community information fairs, and fulfilling orders for resource brochures.
  • Become familiar with a varied-pace office environment that juggles both immediate and longer-term projects.
  • Contribute to development of office resources on specific topics.   
  • Be genuinely concerned about sexual violence issues and have a passion and desire to make a difference
  • Have a desire to learn about non-profit organizations and practices
  • Be organized, have a strong attention to detail, and be able to complete projects independently
  • Be computer and internet savvy: experience and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred
  • Be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • This internship is particularly relevant for students pursuing degrees in communications, social sciences, criminal justice, or Women’s Studies, but we welcome applications from those in any field.

The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship provides full-time six to nine month fellowships for recent college and graduate school alumni to work on international peace and security issues with one of more than two dozen participating public-interest organizations in Washington, DC. Scoville Fellows have the opportunity to work with senior-level staff and to conduct research, write articles and reports, organize talks and conferences sponsored by their host organization, and do public education and advocacy on a range of issues including arms control and nonproliferation, conflict prevention and resolution, conventional arms trade, environmental and energy security, military budget, and peacekeeping. They may also attend coalition meetings, Congressional hearings, and policy briefings, as well as meetings with policy experts arranged by the program. Scoville Fellows are paid at an annual rate of $34,800 ($2,900 per month), and receive health insurance and travel costs to DC to begin the fellowship. The next application deadline is October 1, 2015 for the spring 2016 fellowship, which will begin between January 15 and April 1, 2016
Candidates must have an excellent academic record and a strong interest in issues of peace and security. Graduate study, a college major, course work, or substantial independent reading that reflects the substantive focus of the fellowship is also a plus. Prior experience with public-interest activism or advocacy is highly desirable. It is preferred, but not required, that such activities be focused on peace and security issues. Candidates are required to have completed a baccalaureate degree by the time the fellowship commences. Research and Evaluation
Research and Evaluation Interns support Institute leadership in an array of projects related to producing and evaluating the Institute’s programs. Interns gain experience researching macro-level trends in the field at large, analyzing program evaluation data, and supporting the Institute’s research initiatives, a series of high-level forums exploring the greatest challenges facing the arts industry today. The Institute's current initiative is investigating the collision of technology, artists, and audiences from three angles: 1) The effect of technology on creative practice: how artists are using, or not, new technologies in their work today, and the implications in these choices. 2) The effects of technology on distribution and consumption: How artists and producers are using technology to change the means, location, and nature in which their work is conveyed to, and consumed by, audiences. 3) The effects of technology on administration: How organizations are using technology to change the way they manage and market their work. These positions provide challenging opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate level students with an interest in research and analysis, non-profit management, and evaluation.

Consulting Interns support the DeVos Institute’s engagements with both domestic and international arts organizations through research, data analysis, planning, content drafting, and travel management. Consulting projects differ per client and include a wide array of practical research such as financial analysis, industry research on comparable organizations, event management, affinity marketing, and prospecting research. These positions are ideal for candidates with broad interest in arts management and the trends facing arts organizations.

Program Management
The DeVos Institute’s Capacity Building programs provide training and support for executive, artistic, and board leadership in arts communities’ worldwide. Timeframe and hours
The fall internship will be approximately 10 weeks and will require the intern to work on site at the National Housing Conference (1900 M Street NW, Washington, DC) approximately 15-20 hours each week.

Compensated at $10.50-12/per hour depending upon experience. Class credit can be arranged for full-time undergraduate applicants.

We will enroll students in the BSOS Mentoring Program until the slots for the semester are full on a first-come basis. Second year (sophomore) students will be given first preference followed by Third year (junior) students.

Do You Have an Unpaid Internship with a Non-Profit or Government Agency and Need Help Paying for Transportation?

Bright Futures: 'Unpaid Internship' Scholarship Fund 
Fall submission deadline: Monday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.

For the 2015-2016 academic year, we are excited to offer this scholarship for students participating in fall 2015, spring 2016, and summer 2016 unpaid internships with government agencies and non-profit organizations.
The Bright Futures 'Unpaid Internship' Scholarship awards students with need-based scholarships ranging from $250-$1,250 to help offset expenses incurred during unpaid internships.
If you are an undergraduate student who has secured an unpaid fall 2015 internship with a non-profit organization or government agency, you are eligible to apply.

Eligible Candidates
All registered University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students returning to campus for the spring 2016 semester, who have an internship for fall 2015, are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors (December 2015) are not eligible. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors and to those who have not previously received an award.
In order for your internship to qualify for funding support, it must satisfy the following criteria:
  • Unpaid on-campus or off-campus internship with a non-profit organization or government agency
  • Offered during the fall and completed by Friday, January 22, 2016
  • Supervised by a professional in the organization

To Apply (Submission Deadline: Monday, September 21, 2015 at 5p.m.):
  1. Complete the scholarship program application form by Monday, September 21, 2015 at 5p.m.  The application will be available here beginning Monday, August 24, 2015.
  2. Complete and have signed the Supervisor Statement of Agreement form (this is a Word document).

Paid Internship with the American Red Cross International Services Department


The American Red Cross International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. In the coming years the American Red Cross will deepen and expand its programming around the world while also working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent network, in order to deliver vital help and hope to some of the most vulnerable communities. 


We are looking for an intern to work with the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) team, to support our Public Education programs and large public events. The intern will work as part of a small team where s/he will gain hands on experience working with public education programs and with our public outreach activities in IHL. 

An interest in marketing and promotion, social media, communications and development is essential. Our interns work as integral members of our team and carry out professional level work in a supervised atmosphere. 

This is a temporary, part-time, 20-hr per week, paid internship for the fall semester. The Intern will begin in September 2015 and will continue through the fall semester, with a possibility of extension. 


  • Supporting the team’s outreach, promotion activities, and events;
  • Event outreach; 
  • Drafting blog posts and short updates for our website and communicating through social media on IHL topics; 
  • Grant research and writing; and 
  • Assisting with the collection of best practices and performing follow-up activities to strengthen our networks and gather information for monitoring and reporting purposes. 


  • Advanced undergraduate or graduate student in marketing, social marketing, communications, political science, international relations, or a related discipline; 
  • Must have strong written communication skills; computer skills, including familiarity with the Web and social media tools; 
  • Previous experience with grant research and writing; 
  • Strong interest in international issues and in IHL; 
  • Must be responsible, mature, able to work independently, highly organized, detail-oriented, able to handle multiple tasks at the same time and work under deadline pressure; 
  • Willingness to do background research and perform general office duties, as required; 
  • Selected candidate must already be legally allowed to work in the US without any need for Visa Sponsorship now or in the future. 

Anne Arundel County Executive Internship

County Executive Schuh has announced a Fall 2015 Internship Opportunity for college undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in learning about Anne Arundel County government.

This internship will provide students with as much exposure as possible to the workings of county government as well as insight and guidance to further enhance their academic and professional career pursuits.

Internship Overview
Students may apply up to September 14, 2015 to be considered for participation in one of two 8-week unpaid internships.

This opportunity will involve providing exposure to 8 different departments of interest to the intern, including the County Executive’s Office. The first group will begin on September 21st and the second group will begin on September 28th.

Selection of interns will be made by September 14th. Notifications will be made to selected students indicating which departments they will be assigned during the 8-week period. The students will intern in a different department each week and should initially have contact with the Department Heads (or designees) in order to receive an overview of the department. They will be exposed to as many aspects of each of the 8 departments as possible.

Program Eligibility
• Undergraduate and graduate students actively attending an accredited college or university are eligible to participate in this program.
• Students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the undergraduate l level and a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at the graduate level. 
• A college transcript should be provided as evidence of GPA.

Full-Time Operations Coordinator Position with Global Zero

We’re looking for a highly dependable and responsible self-starter to support the work of our Operations Manager and Programs team in cultivating Global Zero’s organizational stability and expansion. This role is well suited for someone who is curious and detail-oriented, loves a good spreadsheet, and is excited by figuring out how things work - and helping to make them better.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide highly-organized support to both the Operations Manager and Programs team with records management, maintaining database and information systems, utilizing CRMs and tracking communications;
  • Oversee office management and supply inventory, and proactively address needs to maintain a pleasant and productive workspace;
  • Serve as gatekeeper and professional face of the organization when fielding incoming inquiries from vendors, stakeholders, and the general public;
  • Provide basic IT troubleshooting and support (bonus if you have real IT chops, but as a starting place be able to restart the router or call the internet provider)
  • Work closely with both Operations Manager and Programs team on special projects and research such as fundraising registration, profiling potential donors and supporters, or HR benefits;
  • Assist with bookkeeping of all financial transactions in compliance with accounting best practices, including but not limited to completion and review of expense reports and registration forms, as well as compile, scan and organize accompanying documentation;
  • Regularly communicate with employees, consultants, vendors, service providers, and state agencies;
  • Assists in tracking all donor communications including acknowledgements, and maintain current materials for distribution to donors and supporters;
  • Assists in the planning and execution of local, regional and international programs and events;


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience;
  • Experience with administration and operations, preferably at a non-profit;
  • A track record of successfully managing multiple priorities and the ability to work with clear direction and minimal supervision;
  • Experience with invoicing and reimbursements, bookkeeping, customer relations and basic HR management processes;
  • Trustworthy and good sense of discretion when interacting with potentially sensitive data;
  • Meticulous and organized;
  • Solid research skills; and
  • Proficient in database software such as Microsoft Excel.
Desired, but not necessary
  • Familiarity with programs such as Intuit QuickBooks, Salesforce or Salsa;
  • Basic budget and accounting skills and/or degree in Business or Business Administration.

Be a part of the Alternative Breaks movement and do something different for break! Alternative Breaks are year-long team experiences that dive in to social issues and communities across the world. Alternative Breaks culminate with service-learning immersion trips during winter, spring and summer breaks. Participants travel both locally and internationally to engage in active service, learn about social issues, and build upon community assets all while making lasting memories and great friends.

Critical Threats Project Analyst- al Qaeda Team Position with AEI

AEI's Critical Threats Project (CTP) provides the public and policymakers with comprehensive, unique, and objective tracking and analysis of the primary national security challenges faced by the United States.  We are seeking an analyst to provide research, writing, and editing assistance to foreign policy scholars in support of this project. 
The primary area of focus for this position will be al Qaeda’s affiliates in the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, and the Maghreb and Sahel region, as well as other political and security issues in those regions.  Other key responsibilities will include managing a small team of interns, assisting with the management of the project’s database, and research and administrative support as required.
The ideal candidate works well in a collaborative team environment and possesses excellent research, writing, and organizational skills.  A demonstrated interest in foreign and defense policy and language proficiency in Arabic are required; experience in data analytics is preferred.
