Communications Associate Position with the New America Foundation

New America is seeking candidates with outstanding communications and graphics design skills, for the vacant position of Communications Associate. The position reports to New America’s Deputy Director of Communications.
New America’s Communications Associates are responsible for transforming the policy research conducted by New America’s analysts and fellows into rich, digestible content for the media and other key audiences. Communications associates draft and disseminate press releases, media pitches, and social media content, oversee the production of various print publications, and generate charts, infographics, maps, and other visualizations that enhance our ability to communicate complex policy ideas. Communications associates are also responsible for generating proactive ideas for media engagement, and handling daily media requests.
Excellent organizational skills and work ethic is essential in this position. Interest in policy research, and familiarity with at least some of the domestic and foreign policy topics covered by New America’s programs, would be highly beneficial in this role.
 
Responsibilities:
Draw up communications plans, identify target audiences, and produce press releases and social media content for policy papers and other New America projects.
Follow daily policy developments in the news, and generate ideas for timely blog posts and op-eds.
Field calls from journalists, and build strong working relationships with media organizations.
Produce print publications in InDesign, and coordinate their release.
Work with program staff to generate charts, infographics, maps, and other visualizations that enhance our ability to communicate complex policy ideas.
Proactively engage with New America staff and fellows to ensure communications-related needs are met.
Ensure that New America’s social media channels are kept up to date with rich, timely content about events, policy work, and other projects.
Provide media-related resources and list-building support to New America’s Development department.
Assist in compiling and releasing e-newsletters.
Ensure that New America’s media coverage records, and journalist contact lists, are kept up to date.
Assist in building New America’s repository of branded templates, communications handbook, and other staff resources.

Qualifications

Candidates for the Communications Associate position should have the following:
  • Experience in communications, marketing, journalism, development, or media outreach, preferably in a public policy setting. Demonstrated knowledge and interest in policy research preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, and in particular InDesign, is essential. Any additional expertise in mapping, data visualization, or programming languages, is a plus.
  • Ability to be a proactive thinker and act independently.
  • Intellectual curiosity, motivation, and a desire to learn on-the-job.
  • Proven ability to turn complex issues into compelling media coverage.
  • Strong editing skills and attention to detail, together with outstanding organizational skills, excellent time management, and the ability to manage complex operations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and social networking tools such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck.
