Research Assistant Job with the Population Reference Bureau

The Population Reference Bureau seeks a Research Assistant in the U.S. Programs Department to provide research and administrative assistance to management and staff. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of U.S. Programs, this person will assist senior PRB staff members to analyze and report on U.S. demographic trends, ensure data quality, organize in-person and virtual meetings, prepare project documents, reports, and correspondence, and assist with other tasks as necessary.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the collection, organization, and tabulation of data on U.S. demographic, social, and economic trends;
  • Assist PRB staff with data checking and quality assurance;
  • Assist in arranging logistics for virtual and in-person meetings and conferences, coordinating participant schedules and travel arrangements, and coordinating hotel contracts;
  • Assist with communication and follow-up for participants of meetings via electronic communication and telephone;
  • Create and maintain contact databases and project document repositories;
  • Assist senior staff in preparing reports, meeting summaries, and other PRB publications as required;
  • Respond to email inquiries from senior staff and partners. Find articles and conduct Internet searches as needed.
Experience and Education: 
  • Bachelor's degree plus six months of work experience. Social science background and an interest in demography preferred;
  • Research experience working with data, ideally on topics related to children and families, aging, poverty, immigration, or labor force. Experience with U.S. Census Bureau data and American FactFinder a plus;
  • Experience providing administrative support.
Skills & Abilities :
  • Excellent writing, grammatical, and proofreading skills;
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong quantitative and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize according to staff needs and deadlines;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Excel and Word required. Knowledge and use of Survey Monkey and Google Drive tools a plus;
  • Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet database functions in Excel desirable. Experience with SAS or SPSS software packages a plus.
