Job Announcement for Recent Grad with Final Cut Pro Experience

Producer/Writer/Editor (Preditor)

DEPARTMENT: Brand and Digital Innovation
STATUS: Freelancer/Contractor (through June 30, 2015)

**The individual selected for this role will not be directly employed by PBS. The incumbent will be hired by Maslow Media Group and assigned to work on this project for PBS.

PBS is looking for an innovative, up & coming Preditor to work in the Brand & Digital Innovations area of PBS Marketing and Communications. The Preditor (producer/ writer/editor) will be responsible for conceptualizing, writing, producing and editing short and long-form video elements for social, online and on-air use (including, for example, Vine, Instagram and other video venues, as needed). Demonstrated innovation and creativity are key to this position. Must have previous experience in video production with a proven ability to write and produce.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Conceptualize, write, produce and edit creative, engaging video pieces that are appropriate for the project, the brand and the audience
Push the envelope of what digital video can do on social media platforms and in online environments
Partner with creative team members and other departments to ideate, brainstorm and develop creative around various campaigns and programming initiatives
Assist on production shoots when needed
Research, screen and log, build clip reels, select music and other tasks as needed
Be diligent in maintaining a solid familiarity with the programming and graphics packages of PBS to ensure proper visual treatments are being applied
Maintain thorough communication with the Senior Director to ensure schedule and deadlines are being met; report changes, raise necessary flags and convey delays so issues are resolved in a timely and effective manner
Be thorough in the post-production process and be able to spot minor inconsistencies
Demonstrate ability to multitask and to constantly track loose ends and report issues to the appropriate parties
Create series trailers, sizzle reels, and animated GIFs for social platforms
Function as an integral member of the PBS Marketing & Communications team

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
2+ years’ experience producing, writing & editing video for an online, social or media brand and/or agency

MINIMUM SKILLS/EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
Deep and demonstrated knowledge of current social media technologies and platforms
Must have online editing experience with Final Cut Pro
Copywriting and visual storytelling skills are required
Must have excellent knowledge of the video, audio & graphic post-production process
Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This course looks and feels like a traditional summer term class until we pack up and head to Singapore for 10 days. There, we’ll put to use the theoretical understandings gained on terrorist radicalization, deradicalization, and countering violent extremism, engaging with in-country experts and START researchers to look at the Singaporean deradicalization process in prisons. Upon return to the U.S., you’ll present group projects explaining real-life policy recommendations for deradicalization and countering violent extremism programs.

BSOS Sustainability Task Force: Solar Panel Design Process

Last week we mentioned our #BSOStainable project from the BSOS Sustainability Task Force, designing a solar panel charging study station. When designing the structure it was important to determine, for many reasons, the type of solar panels that would be used. This assignment was tasked to our Solar Panel sub-group. These members worked to find solar panels with the least environmental and negative social impacts that were also in a reasonable price range. The sub-group also spoke with solar panel experts on campus to find out what considerations need to be acknowledged when working with these renewable energy units.
Along with the rest of the BSOS Sustainability Task Force, the Solar Panel sub-group guided a site survey tour for possible installation areas of the charging station. The selected sites were chosen because of their apt locations with regard to tree canopy, and the sun’s path throughout the day to ensure maximum exposure.

After discussion with the Design sub-group, the Solar Panel sub-group determined that two units would be needed to support up to five laptops and five cell phones at one time at the station. Also in discussion was ensuring that environmental and social factors were taken into consideration when purchasing the panels. Thus, the Solar Panel group compared USA manufactured panels with outsourced panels. While the outsourced panels were cheaper, the group recognized that the distribution of cost over the unit’s life-cycle was in fact more expensive and less sustainable making the SW 270 Mono Protect (manufactured by Solar World) the best choice for this project.

Here is what the Solar Panel sub-group had to say about their choice:
This panel was chosen based on a number of reasons. First, the solar panels are made in the USA. The protect model was chosen over the plus or standard model due to the extended warranty offered as well as the environmental protection gains. The innovative glass used for this panel allows for greater weather resistance leading to longer service life. The 270 watt panel addresses the electrical requirements needed for this project. This panel will generate the needed power to charge the amount of computers and phones specified in the project along with the lights in the charging station fixture. This panel also is a monocrystalline-structured panel which provides better efficiency than other panels such as polycrystalline. All in all after comparison with other options the SW 270 Silver Mono Protect proved to be the ideal choice for this project both for environmental impact as well as financial benefit.

Schwarzman Scholars - Award for Graduate Study in China

Beginning in 2016, the Schwarzman Scholars program will give the world’s best and brightest students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities.

Designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders, the Schwarzman Scholars program is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. BSOS Students! Nominate an Academic Advisor!

2015 OUTSTANDING UNDERGRADUATE ADVISOR AWARD

The advisors in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences play an integral role in the academic careers of our students.  Through advising, teaching and mentoring, our College, departmental, and faculty advisors provide an important service to students by helping them set, pursue and achieve their scholastic goals.  The College supports an annual Outstanding Advisor Award in order to formally recognize advisors who have consistently demonstrated excellence in serving the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences’ student population.
The award will be presented at the College’s Faculty Staff Recognition Reception on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.
All advisors in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences including all faculty, College, and departmental advisors are eligible except those who have received the award during academic years 2008-2014.

To nominate a person for the award, submit a letter of support to www.bsosawards.umd.edu  that includes the nominee’s name and department and the nominator’s name, address, telephone number and relationship with the nominee (e.g., advisee, supervisor, co-worker, etc.). Student nominators are encouraged to describe how the advisor has assisted them both academically and personally and why she/he merits special recognition. This is the most important part of the nomination. It is on the basis of this information that the award will be granted.  Nominators are encouraged to solicit letters from others who are familiar with the nominee’s work. The College does not narrowly define the criteria for excellent advising. Rather, the nominator determines the attributes and behaviors that she/he believes constitute consistently excellent service.  Examples of attributes that nominators may want to consider include (but are not limited to) the following: accessibility, dedication, problem-solving skills, dependability, communication skills, motivation/attitude, knowledge/skills and innovation.

Cybersecurity Experience for Students - Application Open!

The Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES) II program is a multidisciplinary approach to cybersecurity where students can gain knowledge about many of the fields that intersect in cybersecurity. With an emphasis on hands-on experiences, students gain practical skills through coursework, seminars, group projects, internships, and research, both on and off campus.

Students in ACES II will also have the opportunity to participate in ACES I as peer mentors, tutors, and advisors. ACES II will also include regular interactions with corporate and governmental leaders in cybersecurity, who will serve as both mentors and professional contacts.

Social Enterprise Symposium

The countdown is on! The 7th annual Social Enterprise Symposium (SES) will take place February 27th at Stamp Student Union, University of Maryland, College Park. BSOS Majors: Do you Have Between 75 and 89 Credits?

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about registration for next semester!  All BSOS students with between 75-89 credits are required to complete an official academic audit in preparation for graduation.

What is an official academic audit?
The academic audit is an official review of what degree requirements you have finished and what you still need to complete.  Doing an audit now is important to prevent graduation problems in your last semester. 

When must the audit be completed?
Students with 75 – 89 credits will be required to complete an audit before being able to register for Fall 2015 classes.

Why is it important for you to complete an audit?
1.       It gives you a chance to review what courses you have taken to ensure that they have been recorded correctly. 
2.       It allows you to verify what courses and/or credits you are missing in order to meet graduation requirements. 
3.       It makes sure that you, your department and the college are all working with the same information.

Where do I go to complete the audit?
You may complete your audit in one of two ways: 

1.       Online.  

For 4 weeks – Monday, February 16th to Friday, March 13th – the online system will be open.  This allows students to complete their audit without having to meet with their advisors in person.  To complete your audit online, please go to:  http://www.onlineaudit.bsos.umd.edu/ and follow the instructions.

*Please note ANTH and SOCY students MUST complete their audit IN PERSON.

2.       In Person. 

First, meet with your departmental advisor to review major requirements.

*Please note, ANTH students must have their supporting course work approved by faculty advisor in the Anthropology Department BEFORE being eligible to complete the audit and register for classes after earning 90 credits.

Scholarship for Fiction Writing

Attention creative writers! Are you a passionate fiction writer with a flair for storytelling? If so, submit your application TODAY!

The Sebastian Herbstein Memorial Scholarship in Fiction Writing is a memorial scholarship that honors the memory of Sebastian Herbstein, a talented writer, dedicated scholar and son of UMD professor, Judith Freidenberg, which provides two prizes, $600 for first prize and $300 for second prize, for works of short fiction of 5,000 words or less. All full-time UMD undergrads are eligible to apply.

Applications Open for Summer Archeology Field School in Ireland!

The Archaeology of Ireland's Early Modern Period

This summer applied field program will explore the material history of the Irish Diaspora in County Cork. The location of the study is the area around Skibbereen, County Cork. Skibbereen is located 51 miles (82 km) southeast of Cork City. It became infamous as a metaphor for the impacts and horrific sufferings of the Great Starvation. Skibbereen is ideal due to its commitment to collecting Ireland's rich heritage. The Skibbereen Museum and Heritage Center is a natural conduit between the archaeologist and the local community.
Through archaeological investigations, archival research, and interviews with local historians of the Skibbereen Heritage Center and members of the community, you will receive extensive and intensive experience learning the importance and meaning of material culture as it relates to the larger study of the Irish Diaspora, socio-cultural change in Ireland over time, as well as form the foundation for a comparable database to model and interpret the diverse worlds and experiences of Irish immigrants internationally.
This research is an important move forward in modeling the diversity of material identities in Ireland and creating a database that will be significant not only to Ireland, but also to understanding material and social continuity and change in Irish diasporic communities worldwide.  Application deadline March 1.  Program dates: 05/30/2015 - 07/11/2015.  For more information email: sbrighto@umd.edu.

The University of Maryland is hosting the 5th Ashoka U Exchange on February 26-28, 2015 in Washington, DC, and we need volunteers for 2/26! The Exchange is the world’s largest convening for social entrepreneurship in higher education, bringing together 650 university faculty, staff and students, and it’s just two weeks away!

Applications Open for Croatia Summer Study Abroad Program

Croatia: At the doorsteps of the European Union– Leaving behind the Memories of War and Communism.

The purpose of the study abroad in Croatia is to present a survey of the overall development of the country, its natural and built-up environment. As a part of general education, a good knowledge of geography, both physical and social, can deepen our understanding of events that involve human interaction with the physical environment in Croatia. We will focus on different topics, starting with identifying cultural, social and geo-political issues and complement them with specific physical characteristics that influence past and present human activities in that area.   We will start on the Adriatic coast in Dubrovnik – the coastal city under the world heritage UNESCO protection, proceed to the island Vis for a field study of Karst, tourism and depopulation. We will visit the palace of the last Roman empire Diocletian in the city of Split. On the way to the capital – Zagreb, we will stop on the Plitvice lakes, gem of Croatia, protected by UNESCO.  We will meet with students and faculty from local universities, as well as professionals, politicians, entrepreneurs, and other interesting people throughout the country.

Paid SESYNC Summer Internship

The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) is accepting undergraduate intern  applications for its 2015 Summer Internship Program.

Interns spend the majority of their time working with mentors at their offices or labs on research projects related to socio-environmental issues. Additionally, interns participate in weekly internship program events, including field trips and seminars; these events will include trips to SESYNC’s facilities in Annapolis, where interns will be introduced to the socio-environmental synthesis research approach and will have the opportunity to meet researchers at the Center.

The internship positions are full-time (40 hours/week) from June 8–August 14, 2015. Interns will be paid $11/hour by SESYNC.

Applications Open for Geography of the Caribbean (GEOG/LASC) Summer Program


Explore diverse physical and cultural geographies as you take part in this geographical survey course in the Caribbean. You will visit island cities including San Juan, Utuado and Ponce, Puerto Rico as well as Point-á-Pitre, Martinique, St George, and Corbier. During this course, you will spend time in Spanish, French, and English-heritage islands, meet locals in each location, and experience the variety of regional cultures. This course will introduce you to the environment, language, and culture of several parts of the Caribbean and challenge you to take a hands-on approach to learning the geography of the region. BSOS Sustainability Task Force: Create Change through Multidisciplinary Collaboration

The Behavioral and Social Sciences Sustainability Task Force (BSOS STF) is a student driven group made up of undergraduates across various disciplines, including economics, environmental science, engineering, psychology, sociology, neurobiology and physiology, government and politics, geographical sciences, and anthropology. Each week the students meet to discuss different perspectives on and definitions of sustainability while citing current events and civic issues from around the world. The task force also collaborates to further the BSOS Sustainability Plan by working on a singular project that identifies a campus opportunity for green innovation.

The task force is structured such that each student is placed into one of seven sub-groups charged with working on discipline-specific problems and solutions that contribute to the larger scope of the project and to its success. As a team of sub-groups they complement each other’s abilities, skills, and strengths, and the project receives a comprehensive review from many eyes and specialties. The sub-groups are as follows:
  • Admin – act as student leaders and project managers for each sub-group.
  • Protocol – made up of government and politics students, this group meets with necessary campus leaders to ensure the process and protocol of campus projects is followed, and endorsements are secured.
  • Communications and PR – works on creating marketing and media strategies to highlight BSOS sustainability issues and programs, as well as information about the task force project. This group will continue to ensure that students are aware of and can give feedback about the structure, and have access to it.
  • Solar Panel – these members work on finding solar panels with the least environmental impact that were also in a reasonable price range. They also spoke with solar panel experts to find out what considerations need to be acknowledged when working with solar panels. They will be in charge of finding a place for the panels if the demonstration unit is disassembled after a year.
  • Design – these engineering students took all the ideas from the entire task force, including energy monitoring and educational info, and integrated it into a successful solar power charging study station design. Renderings of the design as well as suggested sites for the station are linked below.
  • Social Impact – this sub-group looked at the life-cycle of materials and made recommendations to the design group surrounding which materials to use for the structure. They also created a survey asking students how they would interact with such a structure, spoke with professors about future educational opportunities surrounding the charging station, and looked at case studies of similar projects from around the country for helpful ideas on how impactful the charging station would be to students, professors, and the community.
  • Budget – these task force members kept the group in check when ideas became too ostentatious. Financials are a very important part of any project, and their research into each component of the charging station was invaluable to the process.
The group worked tirelessly over winter break to complete a grant proposal for the UMD Sustainability Fund. If granted, the funds would go toward building and installing a demonstration (for only one to two years) solar paneled charging station located at one of three possible sites near BSOS buildings. The hope is that after the demonstration unit is on the campus and used by students and professors, the university will look into a larger-scale project that would put solar powered charging stations all around campus.

Adventure Leadership & Learning Inclusion Experience through Diversity (ALLIED)

ALLIED is a six day, five night outdoor backpacking experience focused on exploring identity and its impact on leadership. Throughout this adventure, you’ll learn the basics of backpacking, outdoor cooking, camping, and navigation while gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of yourself and others. 

Participants will:
  • Increase their awareness of self and identity
  • Engage in dialogue to better appreciate differences

 The Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research is offering presentations for humanities and social sciences majors interested in learning how to communicate their research effectively using the Poster format. The workshops will cover principles of good poster design, organization of information, and strategies for printing and presenting your poster.
 
Knowing how to present research effectively is an important skill for undergraduates that may be applied to future academic and professional experiences. This workshop should also be helpful to students planning to participate in Undergraduate Research Day, which will be held on campus on April 29, 2015.

BSOS Summer Grant Writing Workshop: NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Are you a BSOS major and planning to apply to a PhD program in a social sciences discipline after college? Want to prepare a competitive application for an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship that will provide an edge in admission and provide funding for 3 years in the program you attend? Associate Dean and Professor Carl Lejuez is offering a summer 2015 workshop to walk you through preparation of an outstanding application for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship! This is an incredible opportunity to be mentored by Dr. Lejuez, who is an accomplished researcher and who has had great success mentoring students in preparing funded social sciences grants.

As a first semester student in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, you are required to attend a graduation planning workshop and submit a graduation plan by Monday, March 2, 2015. Without an approved plan, you will have a block placed on your record which prohibits you from registering for Fall 2015 classes.

If you submit your graduation plan by March 2nd, we guarantee that your registration block will be lifted prior to your registration date. However, if you submit your graduation plan after March 2nd , there is NO guarantee that your block will be lifted prior to your registration date.


How to Complete your Graduation Plan

First: Attend an in-person Graduation Planning Workshop.

  • These are offered several times a week and led by BSOS Advisors and Peer Mentors to explain the process and importance of developing plan. 
OR
Then: Turn your completed Graduation Plan in to the BSOS Advising Center in 2148 Tydings Hall by Monday, March 2nd.

    If you are currently enrolled in a BSOS section of UNIV 100, you will create your graduation plan in your UNIV course and do not need to attend the graduation planning workshop.
