Communications Associate with the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy for Recent Grad

The Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) is a Washington, DC and New Delhi, India based think-tank that uses scientific and economic research to support better decision-making in US and global health policy. Program Associate, Washington Corporate Affairs with Council on Foreign Relations for Recent Grad

The GTD is an open source, unclassified database including information on terrorist attacks around the world since 1970. The database is maintained by START researchers. Risk Communication and Community Resilience
Government, non-profits, and other organizations rely on public communication to deliver important messages to various audiences. Professional communicators today use social scientific research to improve this process, and START’s research teams have several current and upcoming communication projects that address current research questions. Risk communication is important for delivering messages about impending storms, terrorist attacks, public health crises, and more. Interns working on this team will support several ongoing research projects as well as new projects.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
Interns will contribute to the construction of a global, multimodal transportation network.  Tasks will include analysis and aggregation of large-scale datasets, database triangulation, manual vector editing, extensive open-source research into traditional and illicit transportation methods, digital cartography/mapmaking, and translation of START’s qualitative research into geospatial format.  Interest/experience in global security and/or terrorism is beneficial.

START’s Communications team is seeking interns to assist with START’s communication activities and products. Intern responsibilities vary but may include: Writing and editing press releases and featured stories, planning and attending events, creating media kits, developing and tracking media lists and monitoring social media.

Understanding Domestic Radicalization
This internship is part of the Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States (PIRUS) project, a three-year project which seeks to establish an empirical basis to investigate the underlying mechanisms and processes for individual radicalization in the United States. Previous intern teams researched information on radicalized individuals and entered it into a dataset; wrote case studies on radicalized individuals; performed quality-control checks on the dataset; performed structured qualitative analysis; and assisted project staff in conducting analysis on the quantitative data.

Developing Technology in Explosive Detection Dogs
Interns for this project will assist in developing deployment strategies with explosive detection dogs while utilizing new technology in the field.  Interns will be working closely with four K9 dogs and their handlers while training and being deployed for Person Borne Improvised Explosive Device Detection.  Interns must have a flexible schedule and ability to be around dogs.  Interns will be required to pass a brief background check.

START/State Department Terrorist Organizations Project
Students will gather and analyze statistics on terrorist organizations over time. Projects will include collecting the number and type of attacks over time, looking at trends, and possibly even modeling group capacity out into the future. Interns will also provide assistance in researching open source information on the leadership of some groups for possible future designations. Interns will be co-supervised by researchers at the University of Maryland and by project leads at the State Department. The State Department leads will set and give feedback on tasks. Interns will be based at START’s offices on the University of Maryland campus.

IRD is seeking an Intern to provide assistant to specific project activities. This is a paid internship.

Purpose: The purpose of this paid internship is to become familiar with the practical application of conflict and peace-building mechanisms, to develop marketable skills, and to gain exposure to international development within a non-profit, government-funded context.

Background: This internship will provide support to the Peace through Development II (PDev II) Program operating in Burkina Faso, Chad, and Niger, with collateral support and assistance to the broader Communities in Transition practice area.

Objective: To provide student interns or young professionals with realistic work tasks and personal mentoring/coaching to expand their experience in global development and countering violent extremism, and to obtain their assistance in the area of program backstopping and business development.


Activities for this internship will include:

Provide daily administrative and logistical support for PDEV II and the Practice Area; Assist in preparing and drafting routine reports; Assist with translation/summarization of French-language documents; Work remotely with staff (COP or Reporting Officer) to identify useful case studies/success stories for broad circulation; Compile and distribute foreign and domestic newspaper, magazine, and academic articles related to program countries; Research and gather materials for program countries; Attend meetings and seminars on peace-building and CVE, and prepare written summaries; Keep up-to-date with evolving donor and country priorities; As opportunities arise and workload allows, assist Communities in Transition practice with program development, such as conduct research and analysis on relevant topics related to a specific conflict, countries and actors, serve as proposal team member drafting sections as needed, and support the development of Communities in Transition summaries and tools;

As an NTE Intern, your major duties may include:
  • Review incoming blocking and reject reports for completeness and accuracy and liaise with the appropriate financial institutions as necessary regarding issues as they arise.
  • Input incoming reports into Office of Foreign Assets Controls (OFAC) Compliance database.
  • Respond to inquiries submitted to OFACs Compliance call center by providing guidance regarding the appropriate treatment of a real-time transaction or general information on OFAC sanctions programs.
  • Assist with scanning and filing hard copies of reports submitted to OFAC as well as other miscellaneous office support and administrative tasks as needed.
  • Use word processing and spread sheet software as well as open source research on the internet to produce and analyze documents.

Paid Marketing Internship with TechSoup for Student with Stats and Data Mining Skills

TechSoup’s marketing department is looking for an eager Marketing Associate Intern that wants to work alongside experts in the field and learn the latest digital marketing techniques. You will participate in three projects that will have the following impact on our company:
  • Improve brand recognition as the dynamic bridge to the sector. 
  • Build awareness around TechSoup’s programs that help nonprofits with their mission 
  • Help build omnichannel to improve amplification 
  • Help grow omnichannel marketing outreach 

Potential Responsibilities Include:
  • Hone your data driven research skills and find viable locations for banner ads on nonprofit websites 
  • Learn how to evaluate costs and develop ROI methodology 
  • Learn to use data for actionable tasks and prepare a spreadsheet with details and info on potential banner ad candidates 
  • Learn how to reach out to potential website owners and setup banner ad campaigns 
  • Develop rationale on how to research public database resources to setup lists of nonprofits for outreach purposes 
  • Learn how to develop and execute a snail mail campaigns 
  • Bring your creative juices to life and develop engaging and relevant content using PowerPoint, graphics, infographics, memes, Vines, etc.) 

Learning objectives:
  • Learn how to research and launch marketing campaigns using both traditional and digital methods 
  • Learn how to create content for social media promotions 
  • Learn skills necessary for an entry level marketing role 
  • Learn how to take your creativity and funnel it into promotional campaigns

  • Has ability to communicate with staff, and a desire to assist the department in accomplishing its projects.
