Security Receptionist (English And French Language Skills Required) The Embassy of Canada in Washington, for Recent Grad

The Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C. is seeking to hire a Security Receptionist who will be responsible for operating the central telephone switchboard in both official languages, English and French; providing general information to visitors; and also performing protective security and safety services on the chancery premises.

Starting salary: $42,544 USD per annum, plus benefits

Employment Tenure: There is one (1) term position available, having a specified period of employment of three (3) years, with the possibility of a term extension or a change in status to indeterminate based on operational needs.  This competitive staffing process may be used to create an eligibility list of qualified candidates for this position and other similar positions, with various tenures, including indeterminate, term, assignment/transfer, and/or acting opportunities at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C. Summary of duties:                                                  
Under supervision, the Security Receptionist operates the central telephone switchboard and auto-attendant in both official languages; provides concise and accurate information in both official languages to visitors and callers concerning the Embassy and Canada in general; controls access to the Embassy;  provides security, safety and emergency support services for the Embassy; conducts random security/safety inspections throughout the building, as well as the parking garage, and reports irregularities to the on-duty Military Police; provides assistance to the shipping and receiving area by monitoring and recording all material entering and exiting;  creates and maintains accurate records; and performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Language requirement:  
Fluency in English and French (both oral and written). Please indicate your level of knowledge in each language in your application.

  • Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check; and
  • Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with United States protocol directives for foreign missions.
Essential requirements:
Candidates must demonstrate clearly how they meet the Education and Experience requirements listed below:
Education: 
Successful completion of secondary school. A College/University degree would be an asset.
Experience:
  • Extensive experience providing receptionist duties or front-line customer service in a corporate or government setting;
  • Relevant and recent work experience in either protective security or law enforcement at a diplomatic mission or international organization; and
  • Experience using MS office Suite, e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Rated requirements: 
Candidates who meet the Education and Experience requirements will be assessed on the following qualifications. The assessment may be a written test, an interview, an in-basket exercise, a skills test, or any combination of these methods.
Knowledge:
·         Knowledge of general administrative principles, such as filing, office organizational procedures, generally accepted email & phone etiquette, etc.;
  • Knowledge of security and safety procedures, including First Aid;
  • Knowledge of security screening equipment procedures; and
  • Knowledge of and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite.
Abilities:
  • Communicate effectively in English and French, both orally and in writing;
  • Provide effective client service in person, by telephone, and electronically;
  • Detect and report irregularities, such as security breaches, safety hazards, and emergency situations, to the on-duty Military Police;
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders using two-way radio, telephone, and/or computer applications;
  • Conduct security patrols / escorts without direct supervision;
  • Ability to quickly and appropriately follow instructions and procedures in stressful situations;
  • Perform moderate physical activity, including standing and/or walking for extended periods of time and lifting packages up to 50 lbs (22 kg).

Selection procedure:
