Entry Level Job for Recent Grad who Studied in the Middle East/North Africa

AMIDEAST, a leading American non-profit organization engaged in international education, training and development activities in the Middle East and North Africa, has an exciting opportunity for a Program Assistant in its Washington, DC office. 
The Program Assistant reports to the Director of Education Abroad and supports program activity in the areas of education abroad and publications, in addition to providing general administrative support for senior and program staff.  The Program Assistant is a key link between AMIDEAST Headquarters in Washington, DC and U.S. students, institutions sending students on AMIDEAST sponsored programs, and AMIDEAST field office staff members delivering programs in the Middle East and North Africa. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

  • Under supervision, for designated programs, fielding inquiries from prospective students or institutions and maintaining on-going communication with them through the pre-departure phase of their education abroad experience
  • Under supervision, maintaining on-going liaison and working collaboratively with field office staff regarding designated AMIDEAST Education Abroad Programs
  • Under supervision, promoting programs, including interaction with campus-based education abroad professionals and development of print and web-based promotional materials and strategies
  • Under supervision overseeing designated aspects of the Education Abroad budget, including participation in annual budgeting process, monitoring of expenses against budget, and development of designated program budgets for short-term, summer, and semester programs
  • Financial backstopping, including preparing of purchase orders, travel reports, and invoices; budget tracking and financial monitoring
  • Liaising with the Finance office regarding billing, receivables and revenue recognition for Education Abroad
  • Receiving and processing publications orders and education abroad applications
  • Assisting bulk mailings and other correspondence
  • Maintaining databases
  • Monitoring and reconciling inventory
  • Customer service

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel
  • Database experience
  • Broad knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa
  • Academic study, employment, or extensive and substantive travel in the Middle East/North Africa
  • Excellent research skills
  • Precise attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and a team player
  • Effective multitasking and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility and ability to shift priorities to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and accept responsibility
  • Accurate touch keyboarding

Preferred

  • 1-2 years experience in a fast-paced office
  • Accounting or budget experience
  • Knowledge of Arabic
  • Experience studying abroad in the Arab world
