Human Resources Internship with Results for Development

Results for Development (R4D) is a global nonprofit organization working with partners in more than 55 countries to find new ways to help people escape poverty and reach their full potential. 
Opportunity: 
R4D is seeking a creative, organized and enthusiastic Human Resources Intern for the fall 2016 semester. The HR intern will work directly with R4D’s HR team on a variety of on-going and new projects related to HR compliance, recruitment and retention, social media sourcing, ATS implementation, new employee onboarding/orientation, employee benefits, employee performance management programs and more. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical and provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience related to HR and recruiting functions within a young, vibrant and rapidly growing international non-profit organization. In this position, the HR Intern will have the opportunity to enhance and further develop their skills and understanding of how Human Resources interacts with domestic and international employees, programs and other support services in order to foster a positive and successful work environment.
This position will be for a period of up to six (6) months and will be based in Washington, DC. The HR Intern will report to the Senior Recruitment and Talent Management Officer.
R4D is committed to fostering and nurturing an energetic, collaborative and diverse workforce and promotes opportunities for this internship to shadow the other HR team members, network and liaise with R4D’s technical specialists, programs, finance and additional operational support team members. Other responsibilities and opportunities include, but are not limited to:
Duties: 
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of personnel files
  • Help track OFCCP compliance pieces through third party vendor
  • Research HR, recruitment and talent management trends  
  • Assist with implementation of new Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
  • Manage employee rewards and recognition program
  • Support lifecycle of the recruitment process including - creating requisitions, editing/posting job descriptions to R4D website and other job boards, managing applicant workflow, sourcing of candidates via social media outlets, etc.
  • Assist with the development of HR related training programs for staff
  • Assist with the onboarding and orientation of new hires
  • Provide ad-hoc administrative support to HR team members (i.e.: processing of invoices, database entry, schedule meetings, etc.) and other duties as needed
What will be learned during the internship:
  • Recruitment and hiring process, including: posting job openings, reviewing resumes, conducting phone and in-person interviews, coordinating interview logistics, creating and extending offers etc.
  • The importance of employment law and compliance, especially regarding employment eligibility, confidentiality, proper maintenance of employee files, and forms management
  • The interrelationship of HR and Finance in the areas of new employee paperwork, payroll issues related to onboarding and termination, use of a payroll management database, and report generation
  • Employee benefits management issues related to plan renewal and open enrollment, benefits enrollment and termination, troubleshooting employee benefits issues, and the customer service aspect of benefits oversight
Successful applicants will have basic knowledge and previous experience having worked in recruiting and Human Resources and bring with them creativity, enthusiasm, excellent attention to detail and innovative thinking related to strategic recruitment and HR. 
Qualifications: 
  • Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program (MA preferred)
  • Interest and aptitude to work in Human Resources, or non-profit management/administrative fields;
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work in a fast paced and growing environment
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • One-year experience in an office environment preferred
