Paid Conference Planning Internship with Families USA
Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers, is looking for a Conference Planning Intern for the month of September 2016 to February 2017. Families USA’s 21st annual conference, Health Action 2017, will be held at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, DC from January 28-30, 2017.
Our annual Health Action conference draws between 500 and 700 participants from more than 40 states. Previous speakers at our conferences have included Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton; Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Al Gore; Senators Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton, civil rights leader Van Jones, and many others.
The Health Action conference provides an ideal opportunity to gain skills and experience in conference planning, meeting management and project management. In addition to the conference itself, the event includes a one day pre-conference and several smaller networking and meeting events.
Leading and evaluating the conference planning process surrounding set-up and clean-up of pre- conference, all plenary sessions, and workshops
Facilitating and documenting meetings and decisions
Documenting meeting plans through project management software and assuring planning remains on schedule
Developing conference marketing strategies and preparing promotional materials
Coordinating event registration outcomes relating to accommodations, meals, scholarships and speaker confirmations
Managing speaker presentations and AV specs
Supporting the Conference Team in completing administrative tasks
Helping to ensure the pre-conference and conference runs smoothly, welcoming participants, and supporting the Conference Team in trouble-shooting as needed.
Interns at Families USA are considered part of the Families USA’s staff and attend staff meetings and internal team meetings to discuss advocacy strategy and new initiatives to ensure health care access and affordability for all Americans.
A passion for progressive health care policy and an interest in grassroots advocacy and organizing are required.
Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail and good communication skills.
Candidate must be reliable and detail-oriented.
Previous meeting or event planning experience is a plus.
The ideal candidate would currently be studying Hospitality Management, Event Planning or Business.
This internship is paid $11.50 per hour, and interns normally work 30-40 hours per week. The week before and the week of the pre-conference and conference, the candidate will likely work more than 40 hours per week.
