Education Abroad is offering the EA Access Flight Access Voucher Program.  We in BSOS want to know if we should nominate YOU for an award. Please let us know by January 20 [to give us time to meet the January 25 EA deadline] if you would like to be nominated.  Respond here.  Why should you respond?
  •  International airfare is a high-priced, out of pocket expense for students studying abroad -  easily reaching up to $2,500.
  •  Students cannot use financial aid or regular scholarships for the purchase of flights due to  federal regulations and disbursement of funds. 
  • You thought study abroad was impossible until you heard about this scholarship!
  • You have a GPA of at least 2.5-3.0 (so you’d qualify for a program you are considering)

CAPC Research Assistantship Program

Program Description
The CAPC Research Assistantship Program is for students interested in developing their research and professional skills as well as gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the study of American politics. Research Assistants (RAs) are paired with a faculty member who directs their research for the semester as well as helping them develop a unique project based at least in part, on the research they are conducting on behalf of the faculty member. In addition, students are also assigned a graduate student to help mentor and guide them through the research process. RAs are also given formal training in writing, data analysis, public speaking/presentation skills, conducting academic research, and formulating cogent research questions.

Program Application
The following materials are required for the application (deadline January 20th, 2017)

1.     Cover letter with contact information, major, class standing, UID, and contact information of a professor who will serve as a reference.
2.     A current unofficial transcript
3.     One page resume of your educational and employment background that includes name of a faculty reference.
4.     A writing sample, such as a short paper. Submit a copy of a paper that you are proud of.
5.     A 300-500 word essay on the following question: “Given the current political climate and the increasingly politicized atmosphere in which decisions that affect the production of public policy, how can research and scholarship support the development and protection of American democracy?”

Admittance to the Program

Students with successful applications will be called for an interview with the CAPC Coordinator. Admitted students will be given course credit in the form of an independent study. 2017 Maryland Summer Scholars Program

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  

For the summer of 2017, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 25 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires extended travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

Who can apply: You are eligible to apply if you will have completed at least two full semesters (and 30 credits) by the end of Spring semester 2017, if you have a GPA of at least 3.4 at the time of application, and if you will be enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, in Fall 2017. All academic majors are eligible.

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2017 awards will be midnight on Tuesday, February 8, 2017. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible. Contact us at with any questions.

Research Assistant Position, Education Policy Studies, with the American Enterprise Institute for Recent or December Grad

 Position description
The American Enterprise Institute seeks a full-time research assistant to support AEI’s early childhood program, based in the Education Policy Studies department. The program focuses on the research, policy, and politics of early-childhood care and education (prenatal through age four); the role of early learning in expanding opportunity for low-income Americans; and the implementation challenges of rapidly growing early-childhood education initiatives.
This position provides research, writing/editing, and administrative assistance to the Resident Scholar in early childhood and to the larger Education Policy team as needed. This includes duties such as research for and editing of blogs, op-eds, policy briefs, and reports; coordinating public events and high-level private meetings; and scheduling, trip planning, record keeping, financial tracking; managing public relations; and coordination of public events and high-level private meetings.
The ideal candidate works well both independently and in a team, and possesses excellent organizational and writing skills. The ability to multi-task and work well under pressure is also required, as well as a demonstrated interest in early childhood policy.

In addition to daily administrative tasks (such as answering the phones and managing attorney calendars), the Legal Assistant's primary duties are production of legal documents, file maintenance, managing electronic database system, and assisting clients.
4-year college degree with minimum 3.0 GPA, excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and be proactive, above average time management and proof-reading skills, exceptional communications skills, and computer proficiency. Proficiency in Word, Power Point, and Excel is a must. Must be willing to work paid overtime, including weekends when needed.
