GIS Spring Internship

The GIS Intern will work for the City of Greenbelt Department of Public Works to organize, create, manipulate, edit and retrieve GIS data for reporting, analysis and presentation purposes.

• Create maps and graphs using Esri ArcGIS 10.4 software using the principles of cartography;
• Compare and review field and office mapping data to resolve errors and omissions;
• Enter new map data and digitize historical records and other digital media;
• Develop GIS tools to aid the department in meeting its goals;
• Assist the Environmental Coordinator in developing GIS training for staff.

The GIS Intern will report to the Environmental Coordinator. This is an unpaid 3-month, part-time (5-10 hours/week) position with possibility for extension. The GIS Intern is expected to complete 60-120 hours of service during the term.

• The candidate will possess knowledge of geography as applied to concepts and principles of GIS, map projections, coordinate systems, and cartographic designs;
• Proficient in Esri ArcGIS 10.4, with the ability to review and update baseline data about various sustainability measures being taken in Greenbelt;
• Ability to produce program materials using Microsoft Office, and experience in Adobe In-Design and Illustrator are preferred;
• Has a passion for GIS, and preferably the environment and natural resources;
• Work in outdoor (collecting data and samples) and indoor (office) environments;
• Skilled at taking initiative, problem solving, and working independently.
