Scholarship Opportunity Available
 
To be eligible:
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time (12+ credits) in both the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters at the University of Maryland, College Park. 
  • Competitive applicants should have a 3.0 GPA or higher, show commitment to the university community through on-campus and/or off-campus involvement, and exhibit Terp pride. 
  • Applicants will be evaluated on leadership, involvement, service (to their community, UMD or otherwise), and academic excellence. Legacy status (a family member of the applicant attended the University of Maryland, College Park) is an additional element of the review process, but is not a requirement for consideration.
  • Undergraduate recipients will receive a $2,000 award and graduate recipients will receive a $3,000 award. Awards be be applied to the recipient’s student account (with the Office of Student Financial Aid) and divided evenly between the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters.

Participants needed for a Chinese Learning Study (PAID!)

For a language learning study, we are recruiting some native English speakers who are interested in learning some Chinese words. Participants will be asked to come for FOUR one-hour sessions, and will be compensated $40 in total.

​The participants must meet ALL of the following requirements:

(1) speak English as their native language;
(2) NOT be bilingual;
(3) NOT have prior knowledge of a tonal language, such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Thai or Vietnamese;
(4) NOT have more than two years of individual instruction in any combinations of musical instruments (including voice);
(5) be between 18 and 40 years old;
(6) NOT have hearing loss or speech impairment.

Summer/Fall Internship With the Center for Substance Abuse Research

Position: Undergraduate Internship – Summer/Fall 2017

Title: Research Assistant

Duties: The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with a variety of

community-based/outreach projects, as well as substance abuse focused

research projects. Students can participate in one or more of the following

projects depending on the amount of time committed. No prior research

experience is required.

Community-Based Projects/Outreach

 Maryland Community Services Locator (MDCSL): Funded by the Governor’s Office of

Crime Control and Prevention, CESAR is working to develop and maintain its free online

service locator tool (www.mdcsl.org) that houses information for almost 9,000 social service,

health service and criminal justice programs statewide. Students can participate in conducting

telephone surveys with community providers, data maintenance and updates using Microsoft

Excel, and community outreach at resource fairs.

Research Projects

 Community Drug Early Warning System (CDEWS): With funding from the Executive

Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), CESAR is

conducting ongoing studies to assess trends in drug use in the United States. Expanded drug

testing panels are being used to screen existing urine specimens from individuals under drug

monitoring as part of the criminal justice system. Expanded drug testing of urine specimens

collected from individuals that have experienced a synthetic cannabinoid overdose and seek

care in emergency departments is also being conducted. Students can participate in analysis

and report preparation as part of this study.

 National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS): Funded by the National Institute on

Drug Abuse (NIDA), the NDEWS project is an innovative public health surveillance system

designed to identify new drugs and drug trends as they emerge. The project will focus on new

drugs, such as new psychoactive substances, synthetic cannabinoids, and changes in the use

of other more traditional drugs such as fentanyl and heroin. Students may be involved with

NDEWS in several ways, including assisting with news scans, website updates, analysis of

social media scans and data collection and analysis.

 Spread the Word Not the Virus Project: With funding from the Substance Abuse and

Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), CESAR works in collaboration with

Bowie State University (BSU) to increase the awareness of HIV and Hepatitis C among high

risk populations in Bowie, Maryland. Trained peer educators conduct HIV and Hepatitis C

education and prevention workshops on the BSU campus and in the greater Bowie

community. CESAR is responsible for data analysis of surveys administered at workshops

and conducting a 30-day follow-up study to assess participant behavior change. Students may

CENTER FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE RESEARCH

be involved with the project in various ways, including data entry, checking, and analysis,

and follow-up study administration.

 The Intersection of HIV Risk Behavior and Violent Victimization among Black Male

Victims of Violent Injury: This study involves ethnographic interviews with African

American males who have sustained violent injury (gunshot wound, stabbing, or violent

assault) to examine the hypothesis that those who experience violent victimization may

engage in HIV risk behaviors. Students can participate by transcribing and coding

ethnographic qualitative interviews with African-American male victims of violent injury.

Qualifications: No prior research experience is required. This candidate must have strong

attention to detail, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred skills

(not required): interest in substance abuse/health research, knowledge of Microsoft Excel and/or

Microsoft Access, experience working with community service providers.

Hours: 10 hours/week minimum. Ability to commit a greater number of hours is a plus! We are

accepting both part and full-time interns for Summer and Fall 2017.

Preference will be given to candidates that are interested in working with CESAR for more than

one semester.

Compensation: Internship open to undergraduate and graduate students. May be used to earn

BSOS, HLTH, or CRIM internship credit (3-6 credits). These credits may be

used to fulfill elective credit requirements. Full time students are eligible for a

stipend.

Exceptional Learning Experiences: Student Essay Contest

The UMD Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is sponsoring a student essay contest. If you have had a faculty member whose teaching approach made your learning experience at UMD memorable, meaningful, challenging, and creative, we invite you to submit an essay sharing the exceptional learning experience that you had (no more than 1,000 words, double spaced). The top three essays, as judged by AETL, will receive a monetary award (1st place: $500, 2nd place: $250, 3rd place: $100). The award winners will also be invited for a panel discussion with AETL members about the characteristics of memorable teaching and learning moments. All currently enrolled undergraduate students are eligible to apply.

Maryland Parent & Family Association Student Scholarship Awards


Applications are currently being accepted for the Maryland Parent & Family Association Student Scholarship Awards. The scholarships provide assistance to current undergraduate students in good standing who may be unable to continue their education at the University due to extenuating personal or family financial circumstances. Thanks to the generosity of parent and family donors, scholarships of up to $2,000 per student will be awarded for the 2017-2018 academic year. A minimum of 12 scholarships will be awarded.

5K For Freedom: A Run For Humanity

UMD Students Ending Slavery and Terps for New Horizons are partnering for the first ever *UMD 5K for Freedom: A Run for Humanity* this Sunday, April 2!

Attendance includes food (Ten Ren's Tea Time @ UMD!!), t-shirts (for the first 50 registrants), raffles, sunset pictures, and memorial candle boats while showing solidarity for the human right to pursue happiness!

The registration fee is $15, and all profits will be split between Students Ending Slavery and Terps for New Horizons to support human trafficking survivors and refugees assimilating into the U.S., respectively.

Check in/on-site registration will begin at 6 PM at the sundial on McKeldin, and the run will begin at 6:30 PM. The route will go around North Campus, and as we near sunset we will be offering photographs and candle boats to symbolize solidarity and hope.

Come out and run (or walk) for freedom and humanity!

Out of the Shell is an event hosted by Zeta Beta Tau and Delta Phi Epsilon that is focused on fighting mental health stigma right here on Maryland’s campus. We want the UMD campus community to recognize the importance of talking about mental health and that it is not something to be ignored or ashamed about. Around one in four adults experiences a mental health issue every year, yet we still pretend like this is not an issue in our lives.

On March 30th from 3-5:30 we will be hosting our program at the Nyumburu Amphitheater and helping to stomp out this mental health stigma.

This summer, from June 1-August 11, students will work a minimum of 20 hours-a-week on any one of 15 different projects. Our projects accepting interns range from our Global Terrorism Database to GIS focused research and from Understanding Domestic Radicalization through Unconventional Weapons and Technology. Join the Summer 2017 Archaeological Field School

Do you like history? Interested in archaeology? Want to help a community learn about its past? The University of Maryland Department of Anthropology invites you to join the summer 2017 archaeological field school! Held in Easton, Maryland, we are documenting the heritage of a 200-year-old free black community at the invitation of current community members.

The six-week course in June and early July will focus on excavation methods, archaeological analysis, and community engagement as we research an 18th-century free African-American home and present our findings to neighbors and descendants.

There are two types of Fulbright grants:

Paid Federal Advocacy Intern

Are you interested in how policy decisions are made and influenced in Washington? Do you want to make a difference for people living in cities and towns around the United States? The National League of Cities’ federal advocacy internship will provide a student with the chance to learn more about the research, grassroots organizing, and lobbying activity that influences federal policy. Federal advocacy interns will support NLC’s federal advocacy efforts with substantive projects that include research and oral and written communications components, as well as opportunities to meet and network with other nonprofit professionals, city leaders, and federal staff and officials. 

Examples of Work:

-Conduct research on key congressional committees and members of Congress, as well as the cities in their districts;
-Maintain and update data on cities and city leaders for grassroots advocacy campaigns;
-Create content for NLC’s online publications, website, and other communication vehicles;
-Attending hearings or briefings on a range of policy issues and reporting back to federal advocacy staff;
-Attend meetings with city leaders, advocacy coalitions, congressional staff, or federal officials; and
-Providing administrative support as needed.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should be approaching or in their final year of undergraduate education or in a graduate-level program in government, public policy, public administration, or a related field. Priority will be given to candidates with experience working on advocacy campaigns. Relevant coursework and volunteer work will be considered.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Qualified candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; ability to conduct research online and by phone; and understand how to use a database. Experience writing in Associated Press style and interest in local government a plus.

This is a paid internship for a period of three months (12 weeks). Beginning and end dates are negotiable. Work hours are at least 37.5 hours per week.
