Internship with the US Department of the Interior

This volunteer position is located in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Office of Civil Rights (OCR), Affirmative Employment Program Division (AEP). DOI’s mission is to protect and manage the Nation’s natural resources and cultural heritage; provide scientific and other information about those resources; and honor its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated island communities. OCR is responsible for the development and enforcement of all civil rights and equal opportunity programs within DOI.

AEP’s duties include: (1) planning, developing, and administering diversity and inclusion initiatives and strategies as mandated by laws, Federal regulations, executive orders, and DOI policy; (2) special emphasis programs designed to improve the employment of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities; and (3) promoting the acceptance of employees from different backgrounds and cultures.


The incumbent will perform the following duties:
  • Introduce the Department to online visitors by engaging the public through social media such as Facebook posts, Instagram pics, and Twitter;
  • Attend AEP staff meetings, OCR staff meetings, and meetings with DOI Bureau Special Emphasis Program (SEP) representatives;
  • Work with the Social Science Research Analyst to analyze potential root causes that may limit employment opportunities in order to draft internal memoranda proposing solutions; 
  • Assist with developing content for Agency-wide SEP google site; 
  • Assist with planning special emphasis programs and events; and 
  • Work on Public Civil Rights (PCR) Division projects, as assigned.
