Summer Economic Strategy Group Intern with the Aspen Institute in DC

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster enlightened leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with issues critical to our society. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.

Economic Strategy Group:The mission of the Aspen Economic Strategy Group (ESG) is to gather, in a non-partisan spirit, a diverse range of distinguished leaders and thinkers to address significant structural challenges in the U.S. economy. The ESG fosters an open exchange of new and out-of-the-box economic policy ideas, and socializes viable, bipartisan solutions to pressing economic challenges among Washington policymakers. The ESG also seeks to foster bipartisan relationship-building among the next generation of policy leaders in Washington.

Basic Function:The ESG is seeking an intern who is motivated, responsible, detail-oriented, and a self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills. This internship will include policy research, including drafting summaries of issues and policies; communication efforts; coordinating meeting logistics under the guidance of program staff; and significant administrative support. Special projects will be assigned depending on the needs of the program and the skills of the candidate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:The intern will work under the guidance of the deputy director to support the following activities:
Meeting Planning
  • Assist in planning the Economic Strategy Group’s primary meeting in Aspen, Colorado, including materials preparation, assisting with member communications and travel logistics, agenda creation, and RSVP lists. 
  • Candidate must be available to attend the ESG annual meeting in Aspen Colorado August 7-10, 2018. 
  • Research, Drafting and Editing
  • Research topics as requested; gather information from key sources and create succinct summaries for audiences of varying backgrounds. 
  • Draft correspondence, meeting materials, and other written materials. 
  • Support program staff with document formatting, printing, copying, and other administrative tasks. 
 Communications
  • Assist with scheduling calls amongst team members 
  • Assist with formatting and distributing communications 
  • Prepare meeting agendas for team-meetings and take notes during meetings and calls 
  • Support the program with website updates, drafting and updating content as needed (no html experience necessary) 
Knowledge, Education and Experience:
  •  BA candidate in field related to policy, economics, history, or government strongly preferred; Master’s degree candidates will also be considered; 
  •  Experience in a professional setting strongly preferred; 
  •  Outstanding organizational skills, with emphasis on time-management, attention to detail and the ability to plan, organize and carry out multiple activities; 
  •  Strong writing skills; 
  •  Strong communications skills, including ability to conduct online research and analysis; 
  •  Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint; 
  •  Team player who can also work individually and be a self-starter; 
  •  Willingness to travel; 
  •  Knowledge of and adherence to professional ethics.
