Fall 2019 Internship, Security and Defense Policy with the German Marshall Fund of the US

Position description

GMF’s Washington, DC office seeks an intern to join the Security and Defense Policy (SDP) team. GMF’s SDP work comprises a stream of research and convening activities furthering objective analysis and debate on key foreign policy and security questions facing the transatlantic community. The team’s work spans regional and functional issues, from NATO affairs to energy security, including challenges and opportunities in Europe’s East, the strategic environment in the Mediterranean, and the role of Turkey as a transatlantic partner. The SDP program also supports the office of the Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor for Security and Defense Policy.

The job of the SDP intern is to work closely with GMF program and senior staff, providing event assistance, research, and daily logistical and administrative support. The SDP intern will also receive database training to help manage GMF’s contact portfolio. The internship will provide avenues to gain greater insight into the Washington foreign policy environment through contact with policy experts and access to various foreign policy events. 
This SDP internship is unpaid, but offers an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional experience for those interested in a career in public policy or international affairs.  
Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Assist with program’s convening schedule, act as internal point of contact for GMF staff, and coordinate external communication with meeting participants
  • Provide and assist with research and office support to SDP’s staff and fellows
  • Administrative and logistical duties as assigned
  • Manage contact information in a CRM database, maintaining database integrity (duplicate checking, style guide consistency, etc.)


  • Full time availability preferred
  • Strong interest in transatlantic policy issues
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention-to-detail and multi-tasking skills; must be organized, committed, and responsible
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter
  • Ability to function well in a team setting
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment
  • Experience in event management a plus
  • Experience in database systems preferred
  • Fluency in English required
  • Second language skills are desirable, but not necessary
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

  • Preferred start date: September 4, 2019
  • Preferred length of internship: 3-4 months
