START Hiring Part-time Graphic Designer

The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) is now hiring a graphic designer to work in the field of research communication and transition at START’s headquarters at the University of Maryland, College Park. This is an hourly position of up to 20 hours per week, with an initial term of 12 months and potential for extension, starting in September 2019.
Responsibilities:
As part of START’s effort to disseminate research that educates others on the human causes and consequences of terrorism, START seeks a graphic designer that can visually present research findings in infographics, data visualizations, short form publications, research reports and presentations. Additionally, the successful candidate will design general marketing materials and brochures for the center. 
Responsibilities for this position include:
  • Creating infographics that illustrate research findings.
  • Visualizing data for presentations and short form research products and social media.
  • Designing and implementing report templates.
  • Designing and publishing brochures and marketing materials.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Strong understanding of effective graphic design (color, line, shape, scale and size, space, texture, value) and typography.
  • Understanding of copyright standards.
  • Interest in design, branding and marketing.
  • Ability to work independently and juggle deadlines and competing priorities.
  • B.A., B.S., or B.F.A., preferably in graphic design, graphic arts, or a related field.
  • Understanding of 508 Compliance.
  • Demonstrated data visualization experience.
  • Experience working in a university or research setting to convey research findings.
  • Experience creating products for a variety of stakeholders.

Pay will be between $16-20/hr depending on level of experience and expertise demonstrated in interview and by portfolio.
