All who are selected to participate in CFR’s Blavatnik Internship Program and Robina Franklin Williams Internship Program receive training in the field of foreign policy and international affairs as well as skills training in writing, research, program planning, and much more.
Latin America and European Studies
The intern will support the Latin America and European studies departments. They will develop competencies in research, synthesis, writing, editing, and proofreading. They will enhance skills in research of both Latin American politics and Europe, including isolationism, populism, and globalism.
CFR internships are paid, require a 14 - 18 hour/week commitment, and are filled on a rolling basis.
Summer semester internship opportunities are on a fully remote/virtual basis.
The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):
- Conduct research as requested by the research associate and/or fellow on a variety of topics including Latin American history and politics and themes of isolationism, populism, and globalism.
- Assist with writing and editing content, including research memos and briefs, blog posts, book chapters, and other publications, as needed.
- Assist in logistical support for meetings, including but not limited to preparing distribution materials, helping with guest check-in, and guiding visitors during roundtables and other departmental events, under the supervisor’s direct supervision.
- Assist with preparing fellows for media appearances.
- Track daily news reports that are relevant for the department, including scanning Latin America news and providing synopses.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate (preferred) or graduate student with a concentration in international relations, politics, Latin America studies, languages, political science, history, regional studies in Europe, or a related field
- All applicants should have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework (not including AP classes in high school) by the time they begin an internship
- Demonstrated interest in Latin America and Europe
- Prior think tank and/or NGO experience preferred, but not required
- Professional fluency in Spanish required; knowledge of Portuguese preferred, but not required
- Previous research and editing experience
- Strong writing skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
The intern will develop high-level research skills in both Japanese and English as well as abilities to present the results of research. The intern will receive extensive feedback from the senior fellow and the supervisor, and gain professional skills as they interact with various guests including senior government officials, academics, journalists and business leaders.

- Conduct research as requested by the research associate and/or fellow on a variety of topics including Japan and Northeast Asia political debates, security, economy, and energy.
- Assist with writing and editing content, including research memos and briefs, blog posts, book chapters, and other publications, as needed.
- Assist in logistical support for meetings, including but not limited to preparing distribution materials, helping with guest check-in, and guiding visitors during roundtables and other departmental events, under the supervisor’s direct supervision.
- Perform primary source research in Japanese and English, as needed.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate or graduate student with a concentration in International Relations or Asia Studies
- All applicants should have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework (not including AP classes in high school) by the time they begin an internship
- Demonstrated background and interest in Japan
- Strong research abilities, policy, and research oriented work experience is preferred
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, general research skills in database both in English and Japanese
- Ability to conduct research in Japanese is preferred, but not required
Climate Change Policy
CFR internships are paid, require a 14 - 18 hour/week commitment, and are filled on a rolling basis.
Summer semester internship opportunities are on a fully remote/virtual basis.
- Conducting research as requested by the research associate and/or fellow on a variety of topics related to climate change policy
- Assisting with curating PowerPoint presentations for events
- Contributing to proofreading and editing content, including book chapters and other publications, as needed
- Graduate student, majoring in political science, environmental studies, international relations, law, or a related field
- All applicants should have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework (not including AP classes in high school) by the time they begin an internship
- Prior internship experience preferred
- Excellent research, writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Strong communication, attention to detail, and time management skills
