MLSC GenEd Summer class + PULSAR program information for students

(1) We are offering a new GenEd-approved course in Summer 1: MLSC250 Lol that's not funny: Language change and linguistic creativity in online communication. The class will focus on language use, diversity, change and creativity in online environments and may be of particular interest to COMM students and others interested in areas such as social media analysis, language and society, online interaction and the development of new communicative norms.

(2)  PULSAR is an interdisciplinary program for students interested in language science, a uniquely broad field that cuts across many different areas of study including social and biological sciences, computer science and engineering, humanities, education, and clinical fields. In addition to participating in research and outreach activities, a weekly seminar allows students to meet with guest speakers, read and discuss new research, and learn about different fields, methods and approaches in language science.

PULSAR students work closely with mentors and peers to gain experience and build skills which are valuable for their future careers. The program’s small size, individualized mentoring and research opportunities can enrich students' experiences in ways that may be particularly valuable in our current, more distanced learning environment. PULSAR has been able to meet in a hybrid format this year, and the program's flexibility has allowed us to build community among students both online and in-person.

Applications for Fall 2021 are due by Tuesday, April 27th. More information about the program is available at

If you have questions or would like to discuss whether the program is a good fit for you, you can sign up to talk with the program director, Dr. Tess Wood; attend a drop-in info session on April 14th 12-1pm; or email
