On behalf of the Anti-Black Racism Initiative in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the Department of African American Studies, the Critical Race Initiative, and the Baha'i Chair for World Peace in BSOS, I want to invite you to the John B. Slaughter Reparations Series. This virtual event occurring on Monday, September 21 from noon-1pm will focus on Congresswoman Barbara Lee's proposal to establish a United States Commission on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT). Congresswoman Lee, Dr. Mary Helen Washington (UMD) and Dr. Charles Adams (Bowie State) will engage in a critical and thoughtful discussion on the first US Commission to address truth, reconciliation and reparations. The on-going movement to address the legacy of structural violence, institutional racism and structural inequality in the US places the case for truth, reconciliation and reparations at the center of the discourse on social justice.
This panel will be the first of a series of panels throughout the 2020-2021 academic year sponsored by the UMD Department of African-American Studies John B. Slaughter Reparations Series where national/international scholars and policymakers will discuss the case for reparations in the context of the US. We encourage you to participate in this conversation. The flyer and registration information for this event is attached.
