    1. Constitution Day: Challenging Voter Suppression and Disenfranchisement
Thursday, September 17 from 3:15 to 4:30 pm

Every year, Maryland Carey Law holds a special event for students and faculty to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787. This Thursday, September 17 at 3:15 pm please join The League of Women Voters of Maryland and the University of Maryland, College Park’s MLAW Program for a panel discussion on voting rights and challenges to voter suppression and disenfranchisement in the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

The panel will explore the history of voting rights under the Constitution and how this informs the present pandemic and political moments on issues of voter suppression, vote by mail and the U.S. Post Office and ongoing efforts to restrict the application of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and related election law. The panel will feature Professor Larry Gibson, Morton & Sophia Macht Professor of Law, Visiting Assistant Professor Stephen Mortellaro and Dr. Jason Nichols, Senior Lecturer in the Department of African American Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. The moderator will be Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Piper & Marbury Professor of Law Deborah Eisenberg.

Constitution Day is co-sponsored this year by the University of Maryland College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the University of Maryland Anti-Black Racism Initiative.

All members of the Maryland Carey law community are invited and encouraged to attend.
