Tuesday, October 13, is the Deadline to Register to Vote in Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia; Links to Help with Voting

The TerpsVote Coalition strongly encourages students to meet Tuesday’s deadline to register to vote in Maryland, as well as New Jersey and Virginia

That’s the first of three important calendar items regarding the Nov. 3 presidential general election. Requests for a mail-in ballot in Maryland must be received by Oct. 26, and early voting in the state begins two days later. Other states’ deadlines are available at vote.org/voter-registration-deadlines.

Register to vote in Maryland at umd.turbovote.org.

If you choose to vote by mail, you can have your ballot mailed or emailed to you. If the latter, you must secure a stamp and envelope to return your filled-out ballot.

You can return your ballot in Maryland any of three ways:

  • Mail it in using the accompanying envelope at your local post office or by mailbox by Election Day.
  • Drop it off in a clearly designated drop box only in the county in which you’re registered to vote. A list of drop-off locations is available here.
  • Return your ballot to an in-person polling place during early voting or on Election Day.

The Division of Information Technology has added a voting resources layer to maps.umd.edu, which pinpoints Xfinity Center and USPS mailboxes in College Park that can be used to mail in ballots.

View a sample ballot here and select the county you’re registered to vote in. You can look up the candidates on your ballot for more information on their ideas and platform at ballotready.org/.

Students, faculty and staff are also encouraged to serve as election judges; find details and the Maryland State Board of Elections form hereAdministrative leave is available to state employees who decide to serve.
